  • SPINNING®

SPINNING®new space 045Maybe it's because you can go crazy on a bike without worrying about Billy Bob in his F-150  running you off the road.  Or maybe it's because you will torch an average of 500-700 calories per 40-minute ride. Or maybe it's because regardless of your fitness level, you'll get a heart pounding yet low-impact workout–while maintaining the ability to go at your own pace. Whatever the reason, millions worldwide have found a lot to love about the Spinning® program. The beauty of Spinning is your ability to control your own workout plus the energy created in the room itself. The Spinning program is the original and most popular group cycling class in the world, so don't be fooled by imitators. If your health club or gym isn't using official Star Trac Spinning bikes and your instructors aren't certified through Maddog Athletics (the creators of spinning), then you aren't Spinning - you are just pedaling in someone's faux Spinning program. Spinning didn't become the most popular group exercise program in the country by chance - it's because Spinning is an unmatched way to make your fitness goals a reality. With no complicated moves to learn, a motivating group environment, top-notch instructors and music that begs your legs to pedal, you'll find yourself having a blast while you ride your way to a leaner, stronger body.  EXERCISE EFFICIENCY - You'll  pedal an average of 15 miles before your instructor cools you down.

    SPINNING AND INSIDEOUT

footer_spinning_logoFor those of you who don't know, InsideOut brought Spinning to Memphis. That's right, we were the FIRST gym in the city to start Spinning Memphis almost 19 years ago. And we created one of the top programs in the country, nationally recognized by the organization who created SPINNING. We are one of only two OFFICIALLY LICENSED Spinning facilities in Memphis. There are many impersonators out there, but if they aren't using Star Trac Spinner bikes and following the Maddog Athletics offiicial Spinning protocol, then they aren't Spinning. Other gyms send their instructors to InsideOut to sample our classes. Some of our members join the gym just to Spin, and we've got more certified/qualified instructors than anyone else in the city. We're on our third complete set of bikes, which means that we wear them out from so much usage. We have 15 classes a week (morning, afternoon, and evening) from which to choose, so you'll have plenty of variety.

    CADENCE TRAINING

finalmileageWe added computers to our bikes a few years ago and began our cadence training program. The result - spinners can see their RPM's, mileage, heart rate and calories burned while they are riding. The computers have added an entirely new element to our program. Our instructors can set up a sprint class, intervals, climbs, or combination classes. Being able to see your stats as you pedal is pure motivation. And cyclists know that cadence is everything when you are logging miles. Cadence determines strength and fitness on a bike and it's an excellent training tool for increasing speed and endurance. We also incorporate different instructional rides everyday.  That means you can choose a different classification of ride every day that includes Strength, Endurance, All Terrain, Intervals, and Combo classes.  If you Spin 3 times a week, you can challenge your fitness by signing up for a different profile every time you get on the bike.

    CONTESTS AND ENDURANCE RIDES.

jenlawrenceUltra Spin and Tour de Midtown are two of our extremely popular SPINNING contests that we operate every year.  Tour de Midtown is our 21 day Spinning event that mirrors the Tour de France.  It starts the first Saturday in July, and our classes follow the Stages of the Tour.  If the peleton is in the Alps, so are we.  Likewise, if it's a sprint day at the Tour, we'll be hitting the sprints hard too.  Ultra Spin is in its 5th year and is our September contest to see how many miles our Spinners can log in a single month.  The high so far is 746 miles logged back in September, 2011.  We give away really great prizes during both contests.  Bikes, tee shirts, memberships and all kinds of prizes go out to our riders who can log the miles and handle the terrain. Two and three hour Spins are also quite common at InsideOut.  We have a hefty dose of roadies and mountain bikers who are members, and, somehow, 45 minute rides just aren't always enough.  So, we throw in a few extra Spins to help increase overall fitness and serve as training rides in the pre and post season.

    Spin Flex vs Soul Cycle

Spin-Flex combines Spinning and weights in a great one hour combo class.  The first 30 minutes will be on the bike for a traditional Spin, then you'll jump off, head to the weight room, and finish the second half of class in a weight workshop. You'll get the benefit of a cardio and weight workout all in one. Give it a try. And Spin Flex is a SAFE way to add weights to your cycling routine unlike some of the popular new cycling classes that have you lifting weights on the bike. Spinning is a cycling class, not a step class or floor work class.  There is no way to maintain proper weight training form on a bike with your legs pedaling at 80 rpms or better.  It's just not possible. But you can Spin for 30 minutes then GET OFF OF THE BIKE and weight train for another 30.  That's the only safe way to combine the two workouts.

    ROWING

    ROWING

    wr_logo5WATERROWER

It's unique - rowing against water, that is. At least, it's unique in the gym world.  Until WaterRower designed a rower whose internal paddle used water as the resistance, gym goers couldn't imagine actually rowing against water. Imagine being inside and feeling and hearing the water in your boat swish and swirl as you row - takes you to another level. In June, 2006, InsideOut became the first (and still currently) the only gym in town to offer Rowing machine workout classes on the  WaterRower, a specially designed rowing machine with a water tank at its helm to provide authentic "water" resistance. When you are rowing on one of our machines, you hear the water, feel its resistance, and get as close to being in a scull boat as you possibly can without actually hitting the water. We have 10 certified Rowing instructors who teach a variety of classes each week, including, WaterCrew, Indo-Row, Row-Flex (a rowing and weight combo class) and Zen Row.

    ROWERS TOTAL WORKOUT

Rowing as sport has long been considered one of the premiere combination workouts available. That means you get both an aerobic and a weight workout in one. You'll burn between 400 -600 calories in a single Rowing class (depending upon your weight and fitness level), and you'll get an all over body workout. In fact, Rowing works 84% of the muscles in the body with special focus on legs, butt, arms, shoulders, and back.

    INDO-ROW

Celebrated by athletes and celebrities alike, and dubbed The Perfect Calorie Burn, Indo-Row is a one-of-a-kind indoor rowing workout that will truly change the way you think about group exercise. Created by Josh Crosby, a World Rowing Champion and professional endurance athlete, and Jay Blahnik, renowned fitness program developer and award-winning instructor, Indo-Row is perfect for people of all fitness levels. Working in teams, partners and as one crew, Indo-Row provides a transforming total body workout that challenges the body and focuses the mind.

BENANDJESS12 CLASSES EACH WEEK OR ROW ON YOUR OWN

We continue to add classes to our roster to keep up with demand, so check out the class calendar below for a time that suits your schedule. We require all members to complete the Rowing Orientation before they begin Rowing on a regular basis, and you can sign up for an orientation at the front desk. Once you've been through orientation, you can begin taking classes or Row on your own. We have both Level 1 and Level 2 classes in our Rowing Program, so that you can get experience from the beginner stage through advanced. • TRX

    TRX

TRX Suspension training is a method of leveraged body weight exercise.

So, you always wanted to be a Navy Seal, right?  You fantasized about foreign missions, swimming through the moonlit waters of the Indian Ocean en route to a top secret mission 2 miles southwest of Borneo. You'd rescue some helpless international pawn and return her to her homeland. Right. Even if those foreign missions are just oozing out of your daydreams, it's okay.  There's certainly no harm in being NAVY SEAL STRONG.  And with our TRX suspension program, you can do just that. Born out of necessity in the Navy Seals training program, TRX is a full body training system that works a majority of your 652 muscles and specifically targets your core. Practiced faithfully, you can safely perform hundreds of exercises that build power, strength, flexibility, balance, mobility, and prevent injuries, all at the intensity you choose. TRX is revolutionary because you can take it anywhere, practice it at any level, and develop a core routine that will make you strong and balanced and ready for, well, anything.

    ORIENTATION

We require all participants to take our TRX orientation before beginning classes. It's a short introduction to the equipment, the proper positions, and core body position. Just check the front desk weekly for new orientation times as they change weekly.

    Yoga - The Vinyasa Method

FREE YOGA!  Yes, "our Yoga is free!"  And it always has been. No other gym in town offers FREE Yoga classes to its members, and our Yoga classes are perfect for the person who wants to give Yoga a try without feeling like you're surrounded by ancient Yogi's. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned practitioner, our classes are designed to give you a personal workout. Each class is designed to accommodate all levels of participants. We believe the instructor is the key to determining an individual's level of expertise, and she will provide individual instruction as well. Our instructor, Amy Mann, is one of those rare creatures whose very presence will put you at ease.  She will take you through the class at a comfortable pace, showing you how to master the basic Yoga poses and helping to prepare you to move into the next level. If you have already mastered the basics, Amy will take your level of expertise into account. The Vinyasa Method We practice the Vinyasa style of yoga which is characterized by a focus on vinyasa, or a dynamic connecting posture, that creates a flow between the more static traditional yoga postures. The vinyasa 'flow' is a variant of Surya namaskara, the Sun Salutation. The whole practice is defined by six specific series of postures, always done in the same order, combined with specific breathing patterns (ujjayi breathing). A standard Vinyasa consists of the flow from chaturanga, or plank, to chaturanga dandasana, or low plank, to urdhva mukha svanasana (Upward-facing dog), to adho mukha svanasana, or Downward-facing dog. The purpose of vinyasa is to create heat in the body, which leads to purification of the body through increased circulation and sweating. It also improves flexibility, as well as tendon and hard tissue strength, allowing the student to practice advanced asanas with reduced risk of injury. Each sequence typically begins with 10 Sun Salutations and the standing poses. This is referred to as the "opening sequence". Once a student has mastered the basic poses and sequences, the instructor will guide you to the next level. Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:15 pm
  • CARDIO BLAST/FLOOR WORK

    mardaCARDIO BLAST

This is a whole lot of fitness packed into a short period of time, and you won't know from week to week what the next session will include.  Just know this - your cardio vascular system will stand up and take notice, plus the class may change often and that's what makes it work. This is a Marda signature class. Wednesdays @ 5 pm

    FLOOR WORK

Lighter weights plus high reps mean muscular endurance and toning. That's what you'll get with Floor Work w/ Weights. You'll use 3-5 lb weights, but don't let that fool you. The higher reps will cause a deeper burn that will likely have your muscles screaming for mercy. You'll start on the floor with belly busting ab work, then hit every area of the body with a weight routine. Appropriate for beginners or advanced exercisers. Marda signature class. Wednesdays @5:30 pm
  • Equipment and Class Orientation

WEIGHT EQUIPMENT ORIENTATIONS Every week, our personal trainer, Destin Henry, conducts a Free Equipment orientation FOR MEMBERS ONLY in the main weight area. Our staff will take you through the entire circuit set, help you determine your personal seat and weight settings, and give you a basic weight program seminar so that you will be able to add weight workouts safely to your fitness routine. CLASS ORIENTATIONS We also provide individual class orientations for Spinning, Rowing, and TRX since there is specific equipment involved. We encourage all new members and anyone who needs training on the weights or in classes to join our trainers and instructors for the small group tutorial or  pre-class orientations. We want everyone to feel confident when beginning any class or weight training program. SPINNING ORIENTATION bikesWe require all of our members to take a short Spinning Orientation class before they start Spinning to give us an opportunity to set them up on the bike properly, go over approved Spinning techniques, and to introduce them to the different kinds of Spinning classes we offer. InsideOut's Spinning program has been recognized for excellence by the company who invented the program, and we make sure that our Spinners get the most out of the workout. The orientation class only lasts about a half an hour, but what you learn will be invaluable to you in class. Sign up at the front desk each week for scheduled Spinning Orientation classes.   ROWING ORIENTATION rowerRowing, and more specifically, the WaterRower program is another InsideOut exclusive.  We were the first gym in the United States to implement WaterRowers into a group fitness class.  And that was in 2003. After 10 years of rowing, we know how important it is to get you started on the right "oar" so to speak.  Cadence and drive and power are everything, but there is a definite right way to row. We will take you through the paces in our rowing orientation to make sure you start paddling correctly. Sign up at the front desk.

MARDA'S BALL CLASS - ON THE BALL

BALLSHOTIt's no secret that some of our instructors have cult like following at the gym .  And Dr. Marda Kaiser is one of those instructors.  She could teach the art of Spin Bike Maintenance and her class would fill up because she is that good.  She should be - she's been at it for 18 years.  Truly, it isn't just her experience that packs 'em in. Marda just has a knack with fitness classes.  Hers are usually grueling, focused, and punctuated by her incredible humor.  Seriously. So, this is a ball class, right?  And once you wrap your arms around  a giant exercise ball  to improve balance, flexibility, and core strength, you will be hooked.  Get ready to roll around for 30 minutes, tightening and toning and using one of the fitness world's safest pieces of equipment and your own body to get strong, develop core and increase balance. We do boot camps, all kinds of them in fact, including SweatShop, Bad, Bad, Superbad Boot Camp, Burn and Torch. We do our Boot Camps  inside and outside, rain or shine, at the park, in the dark, at the river, in weather that'll make you shiver, here and there, anywhere and everywhere because they are Boot Camps, not day camps, or beginner camps, or nursery school, or babysitting.  BOOT CAMP. SweatShop is intense, 6 weeks long and is what we consider to be our most advanced BC.  It's a lot like basic training in the military and includes all disciplines of training - old school workouts, intervals, rough terrain workouts, boxing, and a host of other physically exhausting exercises. We also conduct programs that operate  at various  intervals  throughout the year. All of our specialty programs are conducted by our certified Personal Trainers and are tailored to fit the specific needs of each group. SweatShop is designed to push you into a new level of fitness and is designed for people who are already in shape and want to push beyond their normal level of fitness. This BC is not recommended for anyone who has a chronic injury or physical issue. Bad Bad SuperBad Boot Camp is like SweatShop but shorter.  It's intense because we cram everything into a 2 -4 week period instead of 6. Tabata Workshop. This all new high intensity workout is designed to help you re-set your metabolic system.  Tabata workshops are held in one and two day intensive sessions and is based on the Tabata method of training. You will work the Tabata method with our head trainer, Lisa Buckner, then take home a series of Tabata workouts that you can do on your own. New this year is our Warrior Boot Camp that will include a variety of training methods (ie Tabata, Barre, Circuit, etc) on the Outdoor TRX Rack and in the boxing and aerobic rooms.  This Boot Camp meets for 75 minutes each evening for 5 days plus a Saturday 2 hour session.  By the way, it is Boot Camp, so that means you are outside, RAIN or SHINE. runmem3NORM  Marathon and Half Marathon Training Group.  Run with the pack this year if you want to achieve that ultimate accomplishment - the marathon.  The InsideOut Pack trains for the St. Jude full and half marathons.
